Safety Tips for Your Home

Tamper Resistant Receptacles

A great way to avoid unnecessary injuries within your home, especially if you have young children. This type of outlet has an automatic shutter which closes when not in use. The shutter is only activated when all three prongs are activated at the same time, avoiding any injury should your child insert an object into one of the holes of the electrical outlet.

Light Bulbs

Always make sure the wattage of your light bulbs match the correct wattage requirement for all fixtures in your home. If you’re not sure, check with the manufacturer.

Appliances

Never leave plugged-in appliances near water! It only takes a second for someone to accidentally pull the cord into a sink or tub full of water, causing severe injury or even death. If an appliance does fall in water NEVER reach in to pull it out – turn off the power source and then unplug it. Never use an appliance that has come in contact with water before having it checked by someone who knows what they are doing.

Power Cords

Never use a power cord that has signs of damage (frayed, loose prongs, heat up when used). Be sure to check for faulty cords regularly and replace any damaged cords you find immediately.

Plugs

Never remove the third prong of a plug to fit a two-conductor outlet. Contact your local hardware store to purchase an adapter in order to safely utilize this type of outlet.

Surge-Protectors

A surge can happen at any time by turning on a big appliance such as a dryer or air conditioner, damaging several components of your electrical equipment. Don’t let this happen to you! Surge protectors are an easy way to protect your home, and your electrical investments. Use plug-in surge protectors for a variety of things such as computers, TVs, stereos and telephones.

Extension Cords

Extension cords should only be used as a temporary fix to reach electrical outlets. Never put extension cords under rugs or any other place where they could cause a fire. Be sure to check these cords regularly for any signs of damage.

Portable Heaters

Portable heaters are a great way to heat small spaces. Never leave a heater on when you’re not at home or where they are at risk of being knocked over. Be sure to always use these under adult supervision.
